Job Title NEURAL CODING: Scientist I - Calcium imaging of Higher Visual Areas
Job Profile
Scientist I - Calcium imaging of Higher Visual Areas The **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***., located in Seattle, Washington, is comprised of a multidisciplinary staff committed to understanding how the brain works and helping to unlock the mysteries of neurological diseases and disorders affecting millions worldwide. Serving the scientific community is at the center of our mission to accelerate progress toward understanding the brain and neurological systems. Creating tools and data that advance the pursuits of thousands and thousands of scientists around the world is our contribution to revolutionary neuroscience. To this end, the Allen Institute's resources - each a groundbreaking creation - are free and publicly available online. Our MindScope program aims are to understand the visual behavior of the mouse through a few action-perception cycles. The Optical Physiology group in NC uses light microcopy to probe neural activity and function in visual cortical areas, with the aim of understanding how cortical neurons are active during different phases of a behavioral cycle and what information this activity confers about the animal's visual world. As a Scientist I you will do extensive studies of the visual physiology of cell bodies in the higher visual areas: To compare the diversity of receptive fields across cortical areas in the alert mouse To examine state-dependent response modulation in visual cortex Main responsibilities/deliverables: Develop visual stimuli and analysis strategies for characterizing receptive fields in the mouse higher visual areas. Examine behavioral dependence of responses in V1 and higher visual areas, particularly to compare stationary animals to running, and to running and task-engaged. Work closely with the modeling/theory team in MindScope to develop stimulus sets that will most efficiently discriminate between different models of hierarchical visual processing streams. Qualifications: PhD in Neuroscience or related field Postdoctoral experience is desirable Strong visual stimuli and behavioral analysis strategies Experience with rodent or primate neurophysiology Programming and date analysis experience an plus: (Python, Matlab) Strong publication record Strong verbal and written communication skills Ability to work as a part of a team We offer competitive pay, a generous benefits package, and a dynamic, engaging environment.
