Job Profile
The Research Scientist III will provide leadership to the protein purification group in Discovery Research for developing, optimizing purification protocols, execute experiments at the lab bench, manage work flow to assure timely delivery of reagents needed for in-vitro and in-vivo preclinical experiments (75%) and will contribute to identification, proposal and review of new therapeutic target opportunities (25%). Principal Responsibilities Manage and maintain state-of-the art protein purification laboratory in Discovery Research 2. Provide leadership to the protein purification group, direct and supervise Research Associates, manage work flow to assure timely delivery of reagents as required for in-vitro and in-vivo preclinical experiments 3. Develop, optimize and execute purification protocols for proteins (recombinant or from natural sources) so as to meet the required level of quality and quantity, in support of Discovery Research programs 4. Characterize proteins for purity, identity, integrity and function 5. Project experimental timelines at the inception of programs and complete the objectives within the agreed upon time frame 6. Collaborate closely with ‘Process Science’ to ensure smooth transition of protocols for upstream development 7. Participate in the identification and triage of new therapeutic target opportunities 8. Provide updates at project team and managers meetings 9. Maintain records in electronic notebooks in accordance with the ELN policy, and assure compliance by the group members 10. Write/edit ‘Technical Reports’ in support of IND applications Qualifications The Research Scientist III should have 4 – 8 years of relevant industrial/postdoctoral experience including leadership responsibilities Exhibit a sound understanding of the theory governing macromolecular behavior Demonstrated ability of developing, optimizing and executing purification methods for new proteins obtained from recombinant systems (mammalian or bacterial) or natural sources (e.g. serum). Deep understanding of chromatographic techniques and principles governing them Deep understanding of biophysical and biochemical techniques used for protein characterization Knowledge in enzymology, protein structures, protein structure-function relationships Experience in collaborating/directing/managing within a matrix research organization desirable Ability to effectively allocate effort amongst multiple projects and drive to aggressive timelines Bibliography consistent with high quality seminal research Good oral and written communication skills Education Ph.D.or equivalent degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Enzymology, Structural Biology or related discipline, with 4 – 8 years of relevant postdoctoral or industrial experience Competencies Decision Quality Problem Solving Perseverance Functional/Technical Skills Intellectual Horsepower Creativity Priority Setting Planning Learning on the Fly Presentation Skills The candidate must: As a leading employer in our industry, Alexion is proud to offer a highly competitive package of base and incentive compensation as well as a comprehensive benefits program designed to support the health, wellness and financial security of our employees and their families.
