Position Objective: Serves as the technical lead on new product development teams and the technical expert on multiple projects. The position provides technical justification for novel concepts and approaches. The position is responsible for initiating, directing and executing scientific research and/or development strategies.Essential Functions: * Independently plan, direct and execute laboratory research as well as independently adapt or modify experimental methods to achieve technical objectives.* Critically analyze data and interpret results while maintaining complete and thorough documentation.* Determine and communicate strategic approach to scientific and development programs. Anticipate potential problems and incorporate risk mitigation into planning of programs. * Provide guidance to Associate Scientists, Scientists and Senior Scientists in their daily experiments and troubleshooting. * Act as the technical lead and effectively collaborate with other departments (i.e., Technical Services and/or Operations) and across Divisions to coordinate product development and improvement.* Serve as internal technical expert and outside consultant to clients. May advise senior management on scientific and technical topics.* Make major contributions to scientific literature and conferences and prepare technical reports, product summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. * Perform fundamental literature and patent searches related to business segment and develop alternative strategies as necessary.* Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature, competitor products and attending scientific seminars and meetings.* Use current professional concepts to contribute to the development of Invitrogen concepts/principles and to achieve objectives in creative and effective ways.* Comply with all company safety regulations and procedures.* May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.Nature and Scope:Contributes in-depth knowledge in the strategic planning of new products, services, processes or systems. Identifies emerging product and technology trends and customer requirements and champions activities to address them. Acts largely independently in the design of relatively complex programs in the areas of analysis/assessment, development, implementation, testing and quality review. Executes complicated programs and analyzes complex data from program implementing corrective actions where necessary. Job encounters diverse work situations involving a high degree of complexity. Typically involves situations requiring an in-depth evaluation of data, timelines, customers and internal resources. Accuracy in technical decision making is a key success factor for this position. This is a hand-on position to demonstrate scientific feasibility and develop new technologies and products in the labs.Measures of Contribution/Impact: * Creation of new products, technologies, processes, systems and/or services that lead to revenue-generating endpoints.* Contribute to novel intellectual property (IP) through patents and know-how.* Represents the company at scientific and client meetings as well as through publication of scientific papers.* Exerts a positive influence on colleagues leading to improved program plans, greater efficiency in workflow, and/or enhancement of colleagues' capabilities. Exhibits creativity, foresight and mature judgment in conducting projects.Education: Ph.D. degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering or other related discipline, or the equivalent knowledge and experience. Experience: Minimum of 3 years post degree lab experience in a commercial setting. Ten years post-degree laboratory experience in biology, chemistry, biochemistry or other related disciplines, preferably in a commercial environment. Recognized as a company expert within upstream cell culture development, statistical experimental design and assay development. Key skills/abilities include: * Small and mid-scale cultivation of eukaryotic cells in a variety of culture vessels and processes, including batch, fed-batch, and/or perfusion. Knowledge/experience in upstream cell culture manipulations (eg, transfection, selection, cloning) and downstream processes (product detection, recovery, characterization).* Demonstrated capability to develop cell based assays and other assays. High through development experience is preferable. Knowledge and experience of informatics systems is desirable.* Excellent time management skills and ability to work on multiple projects. * Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple and changing projects and priorities. * Excellent verbal and written (technical writing) communication skills and the ability to interpret and summarize scientific results in a clear, concise, accurate manner.
