About the role:
We seek an innovative and motivated post-doctoral scientist to conduct translational research on Small Cell Lung Cancer (SCLC) within the Cancer Biomarker Centre at the CRUK Manchester Institute, led by Prof Caroline Dive CBE. SCLC is highly aggressive and metastatic, resulting in a
Our research is underpinned by >60 comprehensively characterised Circulating Tumour Cell (CTC) patient derived explant models (CDX)1,2. CDX can be grown in vivo and cultured ex vivo, allowing genetic manipulation and function testing studies3. They recapitulate SCLC molecular heterogeneity when implanted subcutaneously or intrathoracically and metastasise to secondary sites observed in patients.
Background:
Approximately 80% of SCLC patients develop incurable brain metastases4, previously understudied due to lack of patient samples and (until now) patient-derived preclinical models. This project utilises SCLC CDX models where brain metastasis is robustly observed2, and benefits from pre-existing transcriptomic data (bulk RNAseq and single cell RNAseq) from tumour cells from implanted tumours, blood (CTCs) and brain. We aim to define the roles of candidate genes in tropism, metastasis founding and colonisation and benefits from our long-standing collaboration with neurosurgeon and metastasis expert Prof. Sheila Singh5.

About you:
You will be a highly motivated, proactive problem solver who relishes a challenge and will develop independent ideas for project direction and delivery. You will have a PhD in cancer biology, cell biology, molecular pharmacology, or a related discipline, and relevant experience in a cancer research laboratory. Prior experience in metastasis and/or lung cancer research is beneficial but not essential.
