Position Description
Environmental Scientists perform program research, planning and development, permitting, compliance monitoring, inspections/enforcement, and technical support services in relation to air, water, waste, federal facilities, corrective action, mining, biology and other environmental programs.Incumbents possess a degree of knowledge and proficiency sufficient to perform work independently with little or no additional training.
This recruitment is for an Environmental Scientist 2 position within the Nevada Department of Agriculture (NDA), Plant Health & Compliance, Environmental Services Division, located in Sparks, Nevada. This position is responsible for implementation of the NDA’s water protection program and also assists with the restricted-use pesticide (RUP) certification program. The incumbent acts as the point of contact for the pesticide waste disposal/container recycling programs and performs inspection duties related to the enforcement of state and federal pesticide laws. Work responsibilities include the collection of ground and surface water samples; routine pesticide inspections and investigations; organizing certification training programs and giving presentations; maintenance of related databases; taking questions from the industry/public on related programs; and coordinating activities with other agencies. The Environmental Scientist 2 must complete the training required to obtain Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA) credentials within one year of the date of employment.

Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in the physical, natural resource or life sciences, engineering or closely related field and 18 months of professional environmental experience which involved environmental program research and planning; OR graduation from high school or equivalent and three and a half years of professional environmental experience as described above; OR 18 months of experience as an Environmental Scientist I in Nevada State service; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience as described above.

The presence of Nevada's earliest inhabitants, beginning about 12,400 years ago, is marked by many petroglyphs and archaeological sites. Baskets, decoys, and ingenious traps are evidence of the resourcefulness of these early people in a harsh and arid environment.
