We are seekingan Organic/Polymer Chemist to join our team in Morgantown, WV. The position will allow for a hybrid of onsite and remote (up to 20% remote on average) research and development support for the NETL R&D; facility in Morgantown, WV. This work will involve a multi-disciplinary, scientific, and technically-oriented national laboratory team, participation alongside other data scientists, engineers, geologists, and computer scientists that produces technological solutions for America’s energy challenges. From developing creative innovations and efficient energy systems, to advancing technologies that enhance oil and natural gas extraction and transmission processes, NETL research is providing breakthroughs and discoveries that support home-grown energy initiatives, stimulate a growing economy, and improve the health, safety, and security of all Americans. Highly skilled women and men at NETL’s three research sites – Albany (****, Oregon; Morgantown (****, West Virginia, and Pittsburgh (****, Pennsylvania – conduct a broad range of research activities that support DOE’s mission to advance the national, economic, and energy security of the United States.
The Organic/Polymer Chemist will work with a distributed, multidisciplinary team working on the cutting edge of innovative and beneficial research to the community. This work specifically supports heterogeneous catalysis with expertise in mixed metal oxide chemistry and polymers – particularly in the specialized research and development of these materials for hydrocarbon conversion reactions. Expertise is also desired in the areas of materials synthesis, characterization, specifically RAMAN (also XRD, XPS, SEM, TEM, FTIR, etc.), as well as testing and data analyses. The candidate must possess knowledge of polymer materials and practical experience with state-of-the-art mixed metal oxide catalyst fabrication, characterization, and reaction engineering. Knowledge and hands-on experience are required in the understanding of the structure and behavior of these materials in different gaseous and reaction environments. The researcher will conduct research closely with the team as well as other researchers at NETL for the development of mixed metal oxide catalysts for the conversion of different hydrocarbon fuels into products (e.g. syngas). A strong publication record is expected.

Primary Responsibilities:
Help manage research and development projects, including experimental design, problem solving, product characterization, data summary and interpretation, report writing, and presentations.
Work on synthesis, conversion, and characterization of polymers to virgin monomers and other chemicals and fuels; explore mechanisms of polymer degradation and identify new technologies for polymer conversion.
Develop novel catalyst systems for energy conversion projects including waste polymer conversion, ammonia synthesis, hydrogenation, methane/syngas conversion, biomass conversion, etc.
Conduct data analyses and characterization utilizing RAMAN, XRD, ICP-OES, GC, GPC, UV-Vis Spectrophotometer FTIR, NMR (data analysis), and others.
Participate and consult with the internal and external scientific community to maintain a state-of-the-art knowledge to successfully conduct experiments and projects.
Generate test plans for catalyst tests and work closely with lab operators.
Present ideas and results to the research team and contribute to future research planning and assist with proposals. Assist or lead efforts in writing research papers and create conference presentations.
Work independently and collaboratively with members of the research team to meet milestones and deliverables.
Required Education & Experience:
PhD in chemistry, material science, or engineering from an accredited university with 2 years of experience in experimental laboratory operations and analyses in a structured laboratory environment
Possess extensive knowledge of the fundamental principles, theories, practices, and established methodology of engineering, chemistry, physics, and mathematics
Possess knowledge of and practical experience with catalyst development for conversion of polymer/biomass to value added products with a deep understanding of polymer chemistry
In-depth experience with product characterization and data interpretation
Self-driven, proactive and possess excellent communication skills
Must be able to meet the requirements for gaining access to work on the NETL campus
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with microwave reactors
Experience in working in a national laboratory environment where safety procedures and processes must be followed
Ability to work independently with minimum supervision
Ability to work effectively as a part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment and interact with people with a variety of expertise
