Degree and area of specialization:
A Bachelors degree in biological sciences or equivalent is preferred. An official, or copy of an official transcript is preferred prior to an offer of employment. (Applicants with degrees from foreign institutions must have the transcripts evaluated by a member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services. ****and the applicant is responsible for all costs associated with that evaluation).
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Professional laboratory experience in biological sciences or equivalent within a working environment or a higher education institution preferred.
Principal duties:
This is a Microbiologist position in the bacteriology section of the WVDL in Barron, WI. This incumbent will function as a microbiologist in the bacteriology laboratory, and will be responsible for analyzing a variety of animal specimens for the presence of bacterial and fungal pathogens and parasites using standard test procedures. The microbiologist will perform specialized procedures that involve complex analysis, troubleshooting, implementation of testing and validation of test results for the isolation and identification of fastidious bacteria. A thorough understanding of aseptic laboratory techniques is essential. Responsibilities also include media and reagent preparation, equipment maintenance and troubleshooting, and serve as a backup for routine testing in the serology laboratory. The microbiologist will also communicate with laboratory staff and clients to report test results and to provide information regarding procedures for specimen collection and submission.

Work is performed under the general supervision of the Barron Laboratory Supervisor.

Goals and Worker Activities

A. 35% Isolation and identification of complex and varied bacterial and mycotic pathogens.
1. Prepare diagnostic and environmental survey specimens (tissue, feces, milk, swabs, etc.) for culture.
2. Set up cultures using appropriate media, read and interpret results, and identify isolates of veterinary diagnostic importance.
3. Perform biochemical differentiating tests when necessary.
4. Perform and read antimicrobial susceptibility tests.
5. Report/record the name of the isolates and other information of diagnostic significance on laboratory report forms.
6. Accurately report results in Universal Veterinary Information System (UVIS) software.

B. 35% Performance of specialized bacteriological procedures
1. Determine whether a specialized procedure is indicated.
2. Using appropriate media and techniques, set up test for procedures which include but is not limited to salmonella culture, mycoplasma culture, listeria culture, culture of milk for special mastitis pathogens & milk culturing using Petrifilm.
3. Prepare and examine specimens (fecal, skin and other) for the presence and identification of internal and external parasites.
4. Read, interpret findings, and report results on printed copy and/or by computer using UVIS.
5. Have knowledge of current National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) requirements for Salmonella monitoring.
6. Qualify and implement test methods including the evaluation of new diagnostic test kits, reagents and procedures.

C. 15% Performance of multiple serologic test procedures.
1. According to standard protocols, perform plate agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID), enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), plate and tube agglutination tests.
2. Read, interpret, and record serology results in UVIS.
3. Monitor ongoing test performance.

D. 10% Complete work in compliance with WVDL Quality System policies and procedures
1. Acknowledge documents, perform document reviews, and write or revise documents as assigned.
2. Complete and acknowledge training as required.
3. Perform laboratory equipment duties such as calibration, preventative maintenance, cleaning and function checks and associated documentation as assigned.
4. Initiate non-conformances, participates in CAR/PAR activities and problem solve as part of the improvement process.
5. Complete quality control activities and maintain records for assigned duties.

E. 5% Performance of other duties as assigned.
1. Prepare media and reagents as needed.
2. Autoclave and dispose of biohazardous waste per WVDL policies and procedures.
3. Communicate with clients regarding collection and submission of samples.
4. Perform backup and other duties as assigned by Supervisor

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

1. Solid foundation and understanding of microbiological and serological laboratory principles, practices and methods.

2. Familiarity with and the ability to operate basic laboratory equipment and instruments.

3. Thorough knowledge and understanding of aseptic laboratory techniques.

4. Knowledge and understanding of laboratory safety practices.

5. Knowledge and understanding of quality control/quality assurance (QC/QA) practices as they apply to laboratory tests and procedures.

6. Effective oral and written communication skills.

7. Knowledge and skills with computers.

8. Ability to prioritize duties, organize work, manage time limitations, carry out multiple tasks and analyze reports.

9. Excellent customer service skills and telephone manners.
