ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST
Job Profile
The Environmental Scientist provides support and regulatory oversight for the Environmental Waste Management Program. SUPERVISION: The Environmental Scientist is under the direct supervision and evaluated by the Environmental Waste Management Program Manager. DUTIES: Interprets and applies technical standards, regulations and policies. Reviews and evaluates technical documents and reports including hazardous waste permit applications, closure plans, sampling and analyses plans, standard operating procedures. Prepares technical comments on a variety of environmental projects and briefing papers provided by the agencies (both federal and state) and/or industries. Performs multi-media environmental inspections, documents data, provides regulatory oversight of remedial design and construction activities. Conducts field sampling and analyzes analytical data. Translates technical and specialized materials into information usable by the public; develops informational and educational material including audio-visual material, displays, exhibits, brochures, pamphlets, posters, and newsletters on hazardous waste and environmental health issues affecting the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. Researches and compiles historical and current studies; documents data and articles relating to environmental impacts on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation; reviews documents on workshops, presentations and meetings. Monitors facilities and ensures compliance with the applicable regulations including but not limited to: RCRA, CERCLA, NEPA, Tribal Waste Management Act and other applicable tribal ordinances. Provides technical assistance in the planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of environmental projects. Conduct various environmental sampling efforts at mining sites in addition to collecting samples, using a field XRF instrument, evaluating data and reporting. Researches and compiles environmental data. QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Engineering or related evironmental Science field from an accredited college or university. Masters of Science Degree preferred. Three years experience in related field evaluating environmental projects and making decisions relative to their merit, writing reports and related correspondence, preparing and delivering oral presentations to groups relative to the merits of the environmental project. Experience conducting sampling, monitoring, analyzing, and compiling environmental data. Must have experience working in the environmental field and have some knowledge of the various environmental regulations (i.e., RCRA, CERCLA, NEPA and Tribal Waste Management Act). Excellent written and oral communication skills. Must be proficient in database management with experience in modeling software. Must have a valid drivers license.
