Job Profile
General Responsibilities : Environmental Scientists operate, maintain, and perform environmental field and laboratory testing and analysis and/or perform other inspection and analysis activities applicable to a specific environmental monitoring program. General duties include: Performing a range of environmental assignments. Assists in performing field and office work in the research, analysis, and presentation of environmental data. Assignments may include, Environmental Site Assessments (ESAs) of property; Industrial Hygiene services; Groundwater - soil and surface water sampling and monitoring services; Assistance with Underground Storage Tank (UST) evaluation; “Third Party” services including performing audits or testing services; Subsurface Investigations; Miscellaneous soil and/or groundwater testing services. Perform marketing, sales, and client/business development for the environmental consulting area. Initiate and negotiate contracts. Specific Duties and Responsibilities : Peform environmental subsurface investigations, environmental laboratory testing, and environmental remediation system operation and maintenance. Perform laboratory and field tests to monitor environmental resources and determine the contaminants and sources of pollution. Duties include, collecting air, water, and/or materials samples of environmental conditions. Set up, operate, and maintain sophisticated field and laboratory sampling equipment. Master the laboratory equipment, including adjusting settings, as necessary, and recognizing equipment malfunctioning. Coordinate activities, and prepare work plans and budgets for assigned environmental projects to ensure maximum staff and equipment efficiency. Collect samples for testing or be involved in abating, controlling, or remediating sources of environmental pollutants. Assure the quantity and quality of the work by requiring strict adherence to established field and laboratory methods and procedures to obtain the best results. Monitor field analysis, make observations, calculate and record results. Maintain records and detailed logs of all work-related activities and ensure quality control during sampling and analysis procedures. Interpret data and prepare/review engineering and scientific reports in accordance with sound scientific judgment, and correspondence related to the work. Qualification Requirements: Four-year degree preferred with program of study in Environmental Engineering, Environmental or Natural Sciences, including specialization in biology, chemistry, or environmental science. Additional coursework in the areas of ecology, environmental law, occupational safety, sampling procedures, and mathematics, particularly college algebra and statistics preferred. One year of experience operating and environmental testing devices and/or performing other environmental monitoring inspection. Ability to plan, schedule, and lay out work according to project requirements and establish priorities, organize, and coordinate assigned work. Ability to install, use, calibrate, maintain, and repair environmental testing equipment. Ability to read technical instructions and use of equipment and environmental control systems. Ability to maintain, collect, record, and apply data obtained from testing devices and prepare associated reports and correspondence. Ability to understand verbal work instructions and communicate effectively. Comply with employer safety standards Good computer skills. Location: ATL has ten offices in NYS (Albany, Binghamton, Canton, Elmira, Plattsburgh, Poughkeepsie, Rochester, Syracuse, Utica, Watertown)and openings for this position exist at several locations. For specific locations, contact ATL. Overnight travel to project sites and other ATL offices may be requried.
