Responsibilities As a Research Oceanographer within the Pacific Coastal & Marine Geology Science Center, some of your specific duties will include: Provides scientific expertise in understanding, measuring, modeling and predicting shelf and estuarine sediment transport processes, coastal change in arctic and active-margin settings, and coastal hazards associated with climate change.Develop numerical modeling tools to aid in identifying climate-driven changes in sediment transport and geomorphic evolution within protected embayments. The models will be developed and validated by a complex network of discrete physical process measurements (e.g., tidal currents, waves, water levels, sediment transport) and robust boundary conditions (e.g., grain size, multibeam bathymetry, Lidar).Develop partnerships with other federal, state, and local agencies to write successful proposals for reimbursable funding and to deliver timely results as required by the agreements.Authors publications in peer-reviewed journals that document new concepts, techniques, materials, or products, and is recognized by the scientific community as a significant contributor to the field of study. Makes organized and stimulating research presentations and represents the science center coastal and marine geology effort within and outside the USGS.Laboratory duties demand prolonged standing and manual dexterity to operate equipment. Fieldwork requires moderate to strenuous activities such as hiking, swimming, carrying and driving All-Terrain vehicles often with trailers. Qualifications Basic Education Requirement: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Oceanographer, all grade levels. A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree with major study of at least 24 semester hours or the equivalent in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology or biology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of oceanography, physics, geophysics, chemistry, mathematics, meteorology, engineering, or computer science. **OR B. A combination of education and experience--education equivalent to one of the majors shown in \A\ above (24 semester hours or the equivalent in oceanography or a related discipline such as physics, meteorology, geophysics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, geology or biology) plus appropriate experience and\/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in \A\ above. ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS: In addition to the Basic Education Requirement listed above, applicants for the GS-13 grade level must have at least 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 level that is in or related to the duties described above, such as: designing, implementing and publishing studies on the impact of oceanographic processes on coastal change using numerical modeling methods. This experience is typically performed at the post-doctorate level. This experience must have shown creative and outstanding research that has led or can lead to major advances in a specific area of research. The work must have been creative in the sense that it developed a basic principle, product, concept, method, approach, or technique, or provided a body of basic information that opened the way for a major advance in the discipline or field of science. This work may have been achieved by providing a method of solving problems, opening areas of research or providing the means of exploring the application of science in a major area. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement. Education Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).
