Overview
Rhode Island Energy is seeking a Human Factors Scientist reporting to the Director of Business Services. The primary responsibility of this position is the application of human factor principles, including cognitive science, to various aspects of the operations of Rhode Island Energy. This includes development of a Human Performance program, corrective action program, investigations, human performance improvement, and continuous process improvement domains.
Additionally, this function will provide guidance and behavior context to processes, procedures, and corrective actions from investigations to leverage scientific principles and theory. This role provides subject matter expertise for supported business lines, including but not limited to Electric, Gas, Customer and Business Services organizations.
Responsibilities
Design and evaluate, through quantitative and qualitative analyses, human work systems using human factors and human performance improvement concepts to increase system and process resiliency, while decreasing cost.
Directly manage the design, documentation, and execution of the human performance improvement program through the company.
Design cognitive aids, reflecting best practices, in coordination with other Technical Development & Improvement groups.
Integrate with stakeholders across all business units to identify opportunities to optimize, improve, and develop employee breadth of knowledge on human factor and human performance related topics.
Monitor and influence the execution of the human factors program company-wide through the management of performance metrics, analysis artifacts, and coordination of related training activities.
Advise Rhode Island Energy’s senior leadership on the implementation and integration of the human factors program within their respective organizations.
Will be assigned an emergency and storm role. This is a special assignment that is activated during storms and other emergencies when the company needs to restore power or respond to other issues affecting customer service. This role may necessitate the need to work after-hours, outside of your normal schedule.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field of study (cognitive science, industrial psychology, human factors, biomedical engineering, etc.)
Minimum of five years of experience related to the application of behavioral concepts, ergonomics, HMI engineering, or human performance.
Strong capability to manipulate, analyze, categorize, and interpret data for trends and learning opportunities.
Ability to communicate results through metrics, and performance indicators; and to communicate lessons learned, and findings through written and verbal story-centric methods.
Possess a basic understanding of the work of an electric or gas utility.
Experience managing a standing program or group of projects.
Enthusiasm for interacting effectively at all organizational levels including both senior management and field employees through relationship building and customer service.
Ability to rapidly learn new business and technical concepts through discussion, research, and questioning.
Ability to work independently and be effective in team settings.
Ability to monitor and control many analyses to timely completion.
