HJF is seeking a Junior Scientist

to support the Regenerative Medicine Department at the Naval Medical Research Center (NMRC) in Silver Spring, MD, to assist the day-to-day operations.

The incumbent will provide subject matter and technical expertise for the planning of experimental design and analysis in alignment with research and developmental objectives. The incumbent will work on various projects in concert with multiple internal and external partners to coordinate the execution of translational R&D deliverables. Incumbent is responsible for developing and supervising research projects and investigating the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and concepts to potential inventions, products, and problems. He/she will work independently and collaboratively with investigators and scientific staff in the analysis and interpretation of raw and processed data including the development of detailed technical reports, quality control, data visualization (analytics/modeling), and assist with manuscript preparation and grant submissions.

The candidate will be responsible for initiating research and carrying out research projects in collaboration with a research team and other scientific staff. In addition, the candidate will be tasked to design, complete and interpret experiments and publish data in reports and peer-reviewed manuscripts. He/she will provide direct supervision and mentorship to both laboratory and surgical team members.

RESPONSIBILITES:

The incumbent will serve as a Scientist in a collaborative research team formulating experimental hypotheses and designing, developing, executing, and implementing scientific research and/or development. Assignments require the performance of complex laboratory test, determinations, and analyses involving multiple procedures and a variety of technical approaches.

Investigates the feasibility of applying a wide variety of scientific principles and theories to potential inventions and products.

Develops necessary new technologies and protocols.

Performs specialized laboratory research utilizing experimental protocols which will involve specialized procedures such as intravital microscopy techniques, methods of measuring organ-specific tissue oxygenation, immunohistochemistry, electron microscopy, small and large animal surgery, basic animal handling skills (i.e., injections and monitoring), ability to perform standard gross necropsy for tissue sample collection, and perform protein analyses using Western blotting, ELISA, among other techniques.

Collects and handles biological samples, keeps detailed records of experiments, supervises data entry and performs quality assurance of databases, and is involved in statistical analysis of results.

Processes and interprets experimental data.

Prepares and presents data for presentations at scientific meetings, writing of abstracts, manuscripts and Final Study Reports, as required by the project.

Trains and supervises technical staff. Serves for mentor of other junior positions in the Department.

Prepares Institutional Animal Care and Use protocols (IACUC) in support of departmental research.

Incumbent must spearhead the writing of at least one grant proposal each year.

Provides collaborative information and data to other Research Scientist that require the incumbent’s expertise.

Coordinates with other technical and professional staff.

Oversee the development and maintenance of Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and safety records with federal institution guidelines.

Maintains a safe work environment and cleanliness of laboratory areas.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education:

PhD

Minimum Experience:

0 to 2 years directly related research experience. Knowledge of appropriate scientific area; ability to analyze, interpret and communicate data. Previous experience with whole animal physiology experiments is highly recommended.

Physical Capabilities:

Long periods of standing and sitting; intricate work with hands; carrying of light and moderately heavy laboratory equipment.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls:

Supervises technical support and laboratory staff.

Work Environment:

Laboratory environment; may involve working with biohazardous materials; may require working evenings and weekends.
