Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in biology, microbiology, medical technology, molecular biology or related field and two years of research experience; OR a Master’s degree in that field and one year of such experience.

Preferred Qualifications

NYS Clinical Lab License; 3 years experience in medical technology, molecular biology or microbiology, as well as performing PCR, real-time PCR and DNA sequencing on clinical specimens. Strong written and verbal communication skills that demonstrate the ability to analyze data, prepare data summaries, perform literature review, and write scientific papers.


The Research Scientist I (RSI) will contribute to the CDC's Emerging Infections Program (EIP) grant. The EIP is a network of 10 state health departments and their collaborators to address emerging infections in the US. The EIP network is a national resource for surveillance, prevention, and control of emerging infectious diseases. This work will contribute to improved understanding of Active Bacterial Core surveillance, which includes invasive bacterial disease caused by groups A and B streptococcus, Haemophilus influenzae, Neisseria meningitidis, Streptococcus pneumoniae, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Legionella pneumophila and Bordetella pertussis. The RSI will participate in clinical testing utilizing culture-based and molecular methods including PCR, real-time PCR, and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. Additionally, the RSI will manage specimens, utilize a data information management system, provide results of testing and contribute to special initiatives. The RSI will contribute to assay development to understand the utility of molecular methods for the detection and understanding of drug resistant bacteria. May travel to conferences and present posters, as well as contribute to manuscripts and SOPs, and provide presentations as needed. Other related duties as assigned.

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Since exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position, the selected candidate may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may receive specific immunizations.
