Our vision is to change the way people think about the discovery and development of new drugs for the treatment of serious multi-drug-resistant (MDR) infections. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), at least 2 million people become infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria each year in the United States, and 23,000 people die annually because of these infections. By 2050 antimicrobial resistance is projected to result in ~10 million deaths per year. Furthermore, the need for new antibiotics to treat carbapenem-resistant-Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) is particularly acute, and in 2013, the CDC labeled CRE as “nightmare bacteria” and indicated that CRE pose a public health threat requiring “urgent and aggressive action.” Achaogen is committed to making a difference to patients afflicted by life threatening bacterial infections that have no or limited treatments options. Our lead candidate, plazomicin is being developed for the treatment of serious bacterial infections due to MDR Enterobacteriaceae, including those resistant to carbapenems. In addition to our deep expertise in infectious diseases and small molecule antibiotic drug discovery, we have established a state of the art antibody discovery platform that enables us to tackle the most compelling drug targets with the most appropriate modality. The Assay Sciences and Innovation (ASI) group is a multidisciplinary research department that drives assay development and new technology innovation, necessary to answer key scientific questions and discover/ advance novel treatment options for patients.
We seek an inspired scientist to lead the development, validation and implementation of assay solutions, enabling discovery of lead molecules for our research portfolio.The successful candidate will serve as the Group Leader to our ASI researchers, enabling broad organizational outreach, with the expectation to positively impact every project in our portfolio.
About You - What You’ll Do
Establish the most appropriate assays and infrastructure for screening in vitro and in vivo biological targets
Evaluate and select new assay technologies that can challenge and accelerate internal discovery
Assemble and motivate a nimble research team to rapidly explore ideas to generate data that drive project gating decisions • Lead and work closely with cross-functional discovery teams to achieve project goals
Identify, evaluate and ensure collaborators (academic and industry) possess required scientific expertise and resources to advance collaborative research programs.
Develop project strategies and communicate them effectively to management
Generate novel scientific ideas for project initiation by engaging the research community
Invest in the growth and continued development of the ASI team by engaging in regular professional development discussions and introducing exciting personal development opportunities
