This position is with the Department of Homeland Security, within U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Enterprise Services, Office of Human Resources Management, Occupational Safety and Health Division.
Joining the Customs and Border Protection, Office of Human Resources Management will allow you to use your expertise involving the application of professional knowledge and competence in health physics. This position starts at a salary of $87,252 (GS-13, Step 1) to $113,428 (GS-13, Step 10) with promotion potential to $$113,428 (GS-13, Step 10).
In this Health Physicist position you will become a key team member of Homeland Security professionals involved in serving as a regional technical authority in the area of health physics and as a point of contact for a specific region of the United States representing CBP for all radiation safety and health physics issues associated with Non-Intrusive Inspection (NII) equipment and procedures. Health Physics involves the protection of persons and their environment from unwarranted exposure to ionizing radiation. Typical work assignments include: Conducting radiation surveys and program evaluations of CBP ports of entry, border checkpoints, research laboratories, offices, and grounds to determine compliance with Federal, state, and local radiation safety standards
Establishing, implementing, and monitoring methods and procedures for the safe use, storage, processing, transfer, and disposal of radioactive materials and any radioactive waste generated from these methods and procedures
Providing comprehensive radiation safety guidance and oversight of the CBP assets in the specific region of the United States or other duties assigned
Serving as Headquarters point of contact and principal expert in interpreting report data and in the resolution of complex problems identified by such documents
Occasional travel - You will be required to travel up to 50% or more for this position

Individuals must meet one of the options below and provide supporting documentation to meet the basic requirement for this position.
Degree: natural science or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours in health physics, engineering, radiological science, chemistry, physics, biology, mathematics, and/or calculus.
Combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or other education; or certification as a health physicist by the American Board of Health Physics, plus appropriate experience and other education that provided an understanding of sciences applicable to health physics comparable to that described in paragraph A.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement listed above, applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience described below.
You qualify at the GS-13 level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience at the GS-12 level or equivalent performing duties such as having knowledge of health and safety procedures in the conduct of radiological and environmental survey activities. Advising higher levels of management on issues that could have a detrimental effect on project success.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
