Job Description:
What's the role?
As Shell seeks to reduce its carbon footprint, and increase the circularity of its products, you will develop and implement solutions that will enable Shell to thrive in the Energy Transition. As a Biotechnologies Researcher you will have many opportunities supporting the delivery of low carbon fuels and chemicals projects that range from defining process characteristics to translating new commercially advantaged processes and technology options to capital deployments and performing due diligence on new investment opportunities.
Accountabilities:
Support R&D activities including steering research targets and guidance on selection of technology development paths toward commercialization.
Develop/scout new or emerging technologies of interest to Shell
Coordinate technical and economic studies for novel and emerging technologies to ensure healthy R&D funnel for Chemicals and New Energies.
Design and implement experimental programs aimed at producing commercially viable biofuel and chemicals from microorganisms
Enable quality decision making with appropriate framing, evaluation of alternatives, economic modelling and sensitivity analysis to ensure transparency and articulate risks and uncertainties.
Define key processes characteristics, control and recovery from system upsets in complex bioprocesses
Provides consulting and guidance during the initial project scoping of an investment opportunity.
Provides technical expertise for business due diligence activities evaluating 3rd parties technologies for implementation in Shell processes, investment and licensing.
Requires working knowledge of liquid and solid fermentation systems
Dimensions:
As a member of the Bioprocess and Circularity team you will be located at the Shell Technology Center Houston in the VP-ship Chemicals & DS Process, and BioTechnology within Projects and Technology. This is a fast-moving area, and the Bioprocesses & Circularity team delivers expert services and technology in the area of metagenomics, biochemistry, microbiology, biochemical engineering, bio-process engineering and advanced technical support.
Support delivery of Low Carbon Fuels projects globally (experimental, technical, theoretical, operational) in partnership with internal & external collaborators that address challenges related to biocatalysts
Subject Matter Expert in environmental genomics and microbial processes including anaerobic digestion, other fermentative process, and bioelectrochemical conversions
Establish models and working knowledge of techno-economic analyses to place technology developments into appropriate context
Leverage rapid developments in AI, digitalisation and metagenomics occurring within Shell and in the external work to Shell’s emerging bioprocesses
Performing due diligence on new investment opportunities (internal and third-party technologies) for bioprocesses
Support required HSSE initiatives
Skills and Requirements
What we need from you -
A legal authorization to work in the US on a full-time basis for anyone other than current employer.
PhD in biology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, environmental engineering or related field
At least three (3) years of related experience
Proficiency with molecular biology techniques as well as DNA/RNA extraction methodologies from various types of environmental samples and bioprocesses
Ample hands-on experience with sample preparation for DNA/RNA sequencing and familiarity with the various sequencing platforms
Fundamental understanding or experience with BioElectrochemical Systems (BES) – Microbial Fuel Cells and Microbial Electrosynthesis
Proven track record of designing, executing, and publishing microbial monitoring or other microbiological-related studies
Experience in one or more of the following areas would be a distinct advantage:
Petroleum microbiology (biofouling, microbiologically influenced corrosion, ‘souring’, hydrocarbon biodegradation, etc.).
Bioinformatics analysis of amplicon and shotgun (meta)genome sequencing data
Statistical analysis and interpretation of environmental genomics studies
Biological conversion technologies (sugar/lipids to biofuels)
Cellulosic processes (enzymatic hydrolysis)
Solid and/or liquid fermentation processes
Biological metabolic pathways analysis and visualization
Excellent communication and leadership skills working in multi-disciplined teams
