Job Description:

The role of the Optical Spectroscopist is to perform advanced analytical testing and making technical decisions using various spectroscopy tools (FTIR, NIR, Raman, UV-Vis, IR microscope). Design, test and deploy measurement solutions, and develop and validate methods for laboratory or in-situ/operand measurements. Scout, screen develop and deploy new analytical technology as needed for R&D programs to meet Shell's measurement needs.

Accountability:

Design analytical experiment, acquire and interpret spectra for ID, composition, physiochemical properties and quantification.

Develop and implement associated analytical methods required to meet project needs.

Manage projects to meet customer budgets and time constraints.

Identify, evaluate, develop and deploy new technologies based on customer needs. Work closely with internal and external partners to design, build, and improve technical solutions.

Help manage safety within own team and the department

Day-to-day supervision of one or more laboratory technicians and/or contractor personnel, including task planning, coaching and skill development.

Actively participate in activities of Global Skill Network, including recommending CapEx items, documenting and sharing best practices, technology scouting and writing R&D proposals.

Requirements:

Ph.D. in Analytical, Physical Chemistry, or Physical Organic Chemistry.

Expert knowledge level in Optical Spectroscopy (IR, NIR, Raman, UV-Vis) with 5 years of hands-on experience.

Experience in interpreting the results of spectroscopy

Experience in industrial product characterization and process troubleshooting/optimization is strongly preferred.

Experience in the following will be a plus: Microwave Rotational Spectroscopy, lab automation tools (autosampler and robots), statistical modeling.

Strong critical thinking, problem-solving skills.

Strong communication skills and work well in a multidisciplinary team.
