This is a term appointment for which all qualified applicants with or without Federal status may apply and be considered. Appointment to this position, however, will not convey permanent status in the Federal service and will be for a period not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Salary Information: $65,017 (Step 01) to $84,525 (Step 10) NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01. Responsibilities As a Fish Biologist within the Quantitative Fisheries Ecology Section of the Western Fisheries Research Center, some of your specific duties will include: Utilizes quantitative, statistical, and computer-based modeling techniques to design studies, surveys, and\/or models for the analytical evaluation of fish populations.Analyzes data, performs scientific tests, and conducts studies on the impact of existing or proposed management or public practices on fishery resources. Develops plans for fishery projects and writes recommendations for changes, elimination, or improvement of operations and program plans.Writes comprehensive reports on study findings and recommendations.Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.Physical Demands and Work Environment: The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; and bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or other similar activities. Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and\/or in the field. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. Travel Required Occasional travel - Overnight travel of up to 5 nights per month may be required. In addition to the basic education requirements listed in the link above, if you are qualifying based on specialized experience, you must have 1-year of appropriate professional experience in fishery biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service. Examples of GS-9 level work may include: 1) Participating in the planning and execution of fishery biological studies with limited number of variables; 2) performing established, standardized tests and analyses on a broad range of biological samples; 3) conducting fishery biological studies using established fact finding procedures. For examples 1-3, assignments were made with the objectives, priorities, and deadlines defined. The work was planned and carried out independently in accordance with proven techniques, methods, and practices. Controversial use of approaches or modifications of standard procedures were typically discussed with a designated person before being carried out. You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the position by the closing date of the announcement.
