The UPD-GOM Data Capability Lead will report directly to the Fit For the Future (FFF) General Manager. The purpose of the role is to build a UPD-GOM “value from data” capability in the organization, generating a significant advantage via:

expertise in data science, analytics, business intelligence, and the key enablers of foundational data governance, corporate data platforms, and enterprise IT portfolios; and

developing the data science skills of the UPD-GOM asset / asset support technical staff to enable identification, validation, and realization of “value from data” at scale – increased process safety, production, reduction of deferment, and improvement of efficiency and ways of working.

The role is expected to have a close working relationship with the GOM assets, GOM asset central functions (including surveillance, maintenance reliability and turnaround, FFF, safety, and other disciplines), development, and Project and Technology (P&T) organisations alongside the remaining of the business to support the implementation of digital/data innovation to drive business performance consistently with the UPD-GOM business goals.

The individual is expected to be proficient with Agile techniques, able to drive quick prototyping and implementing, connect with the global digitalisation community to leverage internal Royal Dutch Shell talent, connect externally, and engage stakeholders and support the extraction of exceptional value from data.

Accountabilities

Assisting the GOM FFF GM with overall digital enablement strategy and execution, including data and systems, digital products, and IT-enabled simplification;

Delivering advanced digital products encompassing digitalisation, automation, robotization – Industry 4.0 initiatives in the GOM;

Dotted-line managing a team of approximately 15 digital ninjas expected to spend 50% of their time developing/delivering digital products for the GOM with accountability for their delivery and contribution to the bottom line and their professional development – digital competencies, data ownership and stewardship, and access to external knowledge;

Supporting the integration of any product and activity with our data platforms of choice, maximising integration with and value from the platforms; and

Maximising use, reuse and replication of potential opportunities from other parts of Shell and the outside world, putting business needs first and strategically driving the development and deployment of digital opportunities to contribute to the GOM Ambition

Supporting data quality improvement efforts and being a champion for data quality, ownership, and stewardship in the GOM

The role has also the following HSSE and leadership accountabilities:

Contributing to Goal-Zero by ensuring that HSSE risk management is placed at the heart of the thinking around digital enablement and business improvement.

Building/leading and managing ad-hoc project teams with dotted or no direct reporting lines

Key interactions:

Regular working sessions with the asset, front line and project teams to understand and address customer needs, and ensure engagement of product owners, sponsors, and end-users

Regular working session with analytics teams and data teams to understand available technologies, other “value from data” activities in other Operating Units, IT portfolio changes, etc.

Regular engagement with Shell IT and digitalisation teams to understand available technologies and building synergies

Ongoing interactions with FFF and Process Data Systems teams, supporting implementation of Fit for Future and cadence momentum into the organization

Requirements:

Skills & Requirements

Mastery in the Python and R programming language and ability to choose the most suited language based on the data engineering or science problem

Verifiable record of success in delivering high quality Minimum Viable Products (MVPs) – Shell experience preferred

Certification in at least one Agile methodology and evidence its application to past work required

Evidence of having created, prioritised and managed product backlogs based on both intrinsic and non-intrinsic value

Demonstrated understanding of the Industry 4.0 applications, their impacts on the business and how to implement and derive value from them

Proven ability to lead teams and deliver results through direct (control) and dotted (influence) reporting line

Proven ability to effectively interact at all levels of the organisation – from leadership teams to end-users of digital products with varying seniority and digital literacy

Unwilling to accept status quo and perceived wisdom, continuously seeking to drive more value

Excellent problem-solving skills, ability to help others organize problem solving

Engaged and motivated by the business improvement agenda, driving bottom line value through innovation and Industry 4.0
