The position requires supervising and training Biological Scientists III, Biological Scientist II and OPS staff. The position will fulfill the responsibilities of the Epidemiology Biological Scientist IV- Supervisor in his\/her absence. More specifically the position would include the following: Responsible for all supervisory duties including, but not limited to, hiring and selection, developing performance plans, conducting performance apprasials, planning and directing their work, approving leave, and taking disciplinary action as appropriate.\u00a0 Incumbent is responsible for approving direct reports\u2019 timesheets, as well as supervising and counseling staff. Motivates employees to improve the quality and quantity of work performed. Plans workloads, work flows, work objectives and time utilization with employees. Evaluates direct reports performance through establishing performance indicators and conducting periodic performance reviews. This includes meeting with employees to ensure the established criteria are met. Trains employees in methods for performing an effective and efficient job. Communicates with employees both indiviudally and in staff meetings. Direct the work of employees to ensure best use of time and resources. Conducting complex activities around surveillance of disease (in individuals and outbreaks) to include disease associated with food, water, and those suspected of being due to weapons of mass destruction biological agents. This process would include interviewing individuals and writing up these reports so they can be submitted to the electronic database. This may also entail questionnaire and interview design. Will also advise patients regarding their disease and how to prevent future occurrence (if the disease can recur). Initiate case investigations or reported diseases on the direction of surveillance and investigation supervisors during specified time intervals. This may include appropriate and targeted field investigations and notification of managers for appropriate action. The position involves looking at the data entered and writing reports. Also, provide oral and written presentations to both health department employees and the community thus providing education. Serve as Viral Hepatitis and Lead Surveillance Epidemiologist\/Supervisor in investigation and enhance program efforts in this area. Supervising and training Biological Scientists III, Biological Scientist II and OPS staff. This process would include interviewing individuals and writing up these reports so they can be submitted to the electronic database. This may also entail questionnaire and interview design. Will also advise patients regarding their disease and how to prevent future occurrence (if the disease can recur). Responsible for training, assigning and reviewing work of other staff and trainees in regards to disease outbreak investigations and preparedness. Communication--Participate in teleconferences, EpiCom, and various meetings where regional and state information is shared. Will visit and consult with community health care providers giving information to the current reporting requirements for communicable disease. As a member of the Florida Department of Health and part of the epidemiology team, this position will be required to be available on weekends and holidays in support of disaster relief and in support of an epidemiologic investigation. May be called upon to be a team leader on an Epi Strike Team. Will be an information custodian for the communicable disease database as well as paper copies of reports submitted. Will be the key custodian to the epidemiology work area as well as individual\u2019s workspace. Perform other related duties as required. KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & ABILITIES Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques used in biological and epidemiological research, analysis or testing. Knowledge and understanding of microbiology and pathology of bacteria and viruses. Knowledge of the procedures, techniques and equipment used in laboratory testing and analysis of communicable diseases. Knowledge of food and waterborne diseases. Knowledge of Viral Hepatitis. Knowledge of lead, lead exposure and case management. Knowledge of case management. Knowledge of the methods of data collection and database development. Knowledge and understanding of statistical software. Knowledge of GIS mapping. Skill in the use of scientific field equipment and specimen collection.. Skill in the use of statistical software (SAS, SPSS, Epi Info, Access) Skill in the use of investigative and interview techniques. Ability to collect, record and analyze scientific data relating to the biological sciences. Ability to conduct biological research, studies or analyses using scientific methods and techniques. Ability to perform quantitative analysis of scientific data. Ability to plan, organize and coordinate work assignments. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Ability to work independently. Ability to utilize problem-solving techniques. Ability to understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to the biological sciences. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Valid FL driver\u2019s license free of major infractions and access to a reliable automobile to be utilized for work purposes. Able to work occasional nights and weekends determined by programmatic needs. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Master\u2019s in Public Health At least 2 years\u2019 experience performing disease investigations. At least 3 years\u2019 experience in case management.
