The Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center at the **MEMBERS ONLY**SIGN UP NOW***., School of Engineering is seeking applicants for an end-date, full-time Research Assistant 3. Job Summary Under the direction of the Director of the Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center (CTSRC), provides statistical support in developing and maintaining an enterprise level crash analysis system that conforms to the Highway Safety Manual (HSM). This position allows for a wide range of creativity and direct development of tools which will work to advance public safety in the state of Connecticut. The successful candidate will need the skills to research and implement new safety analysis methods and effectively communicate the methods developed. This person will be responsible for spatial sampling, quality control analyses, developing Connecticut-specific Safety Performance Functions and Crash Modification Factors, and conducting advanced statistical data analysis as described in the HSM. The resulting system will be used by engineers statewide to facilitate and expedite the analysis of the transportation system in Connecticut with respect to motor vehicle crash data. Duties and Responsibilities Learn and implement methods in the Highway Safety Manual.
Provide statistical guidance and support for analysis methods.
Maintain currency with advances in statistical methodology; maintain proficiency in applying new and varied methods and; be competent in justifying methods selected.
Drive statistically robust approaches or solutions that increase the probability of technical success, save time, increase efficiency or otherwise directly impact safety analysis.
Effectively lead cross-functional or multi-disciplinary groups and use technical expertise to influence decisions.
Provide expertise in model development and assessment of model fit for devised methods.
Collaborate with study personnel to provide input on study protocol, design studies and write protocols for the conduct of each study.
Work as part of a team with the CT DOT in the development of this tool to meet their specific needs.
Take initiative and action to solve problems.
Represent the project, CTSRC, and/or the University at internal and external functions related to the project.
Attend regular meetings with the Connecticut Department of Transportation.
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications BS in statistics with at least 5 years of experience or MS in Statistics with at least 2 years of experience
At least 12 months of applied statistical research experience
Experience with statistical software (SAS, R, SPSS, etc.)
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Willingness and ability to travel throughout the state as needed for meetings
Preferred Qualifications PhD degree in Statistics with focus in modeling and Bayesian analysis/statistics
Experience with spatial analysis
Programming experience
Knowledge of database and file transfer structures and software such as; XML, SFTP, ArcGIS SAS, JAVA, Microsoft SQL and SQL
Appointment Terms This is a full-time, 11-month position based on available funding, subject to annual renewal. Salary will be commensurate with successful candidate's background and experience.
