The Staff Scientist’s role will include:Lead the development and execution of an LBNL-industry collaboration on Internet-based Building Operating System (iBOS) for commercial buildings. iBOS is one of three initiatives of the Global Partnership Alliance (GPA).Provide leadership and management of an interdisciplinary team of developers and subject matter experts in developing and testing the OS, with applications in grid integration, controls, and internet of things (IOT).Serve as primary point of contact for communications with stakeholders and partners the iBOS effort.Evaluate needs and challenges of commercial building energy and services management systems and develop new technology to demonstrate new capabilities in communication and controls to address these challenges.Supervise the initiative co-lead, and receive input and guidance from key LBNL advisors.Serve as the principal investigator for the iBOS initiative. Current research in LBNL’s Building Technology and Urban Systems Division includes the development and application of building energy simulation, research on building controls and automation, performance monitoring, glazings, window systems, high performance facades, management of peak electricity demand, and sensing and networking. The Staff Scientist will focus on computer operating systems for commercial buildings, but will collaborate with departmental staff in key application areas that the operating system is designed to support.Specific Responsibilities:As principal investigator (PI), lead the collaborative development of an internet building operating system.Work with external collaborators and industry/owner partners to define technical strategy, use cases, functional and performance specifications, architectures to meet the business and R&D; needs of all parties.Responsible for applying computer science research expertise to develop, lead and grow this new R&D; program focused on building control and operations platform. The research activities will encompass the following:Synthesize current research in operating platforms, and architectures for distributed and centralized system control applications.Transfer cutting-edge developments in computer science to develop new domain-specific technology for building control and operations.Pursue new public- and private-sector funding opportunities beyond the Global Alliance Partnership.Lead delivery of the iBOS operating system, working with a team of LBNL, industry, and academic partners; partners will be expected to contribute expertise from the fields of building controls, automation, computation and information technology.Work with LBN advisors and external partners to define an RD&D; agenda with specific tasks and scopes of work; lead technology planning, the evaluation of alternative technologies, and prototype development. Develop test plans and implement the operating system in an experimental test facilityManage the co-lead to identify and hire sub-contractors.Routinely present to high-level business executives.Negotiate licensing and intellectual property, interfacing with LBNL’s Innovation Partnerships Office and multi-partner technical working group. With the initiative co-lead, design technical workshops with partners and industry stakeholder audiences.Author position papers, thought pieces, conference papers, and refereed journal articles.With the initiative co-lead, prepare outreach materials, technical reports, and presentations for internal and external audiences.Travel to partner meetings, stakeholder workshops, and conferences.Supervise other iBOS initiative staff, including the co-lead, technical team, and program managers. Additional desired responsibilities:Work with other Division PIs to identify and respond to funding opportunities.Participate in Division group meetings and discussions regarding the broader research portfolio in commercial buildings.Required Qualifications:PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field, or equivalent training or experience in these discipline areas.Demonstrated experience as an investigator or researcher in a corporate, academic or national laboratory R&D; institution.Demonstrated experience developing successful and competitive R&D; funding proposals.Strong publications record.Expertise in large scale distributed computing, operating systems, architectures for distributed and centralized system control applications, and networking and communications protocols.Hands-on experience leading the development, testing and validation of software product specifications and requirements for platform and service architectures.Deep knowledge in the latest and emerging technologies and how they can be integrated into new product solutions.Demonstrated ability to work independently, uncover problems, and to identify and initiate appropriate actions for resolution.Excellence in technology road-mapping, technical execution, and successful product release.Demonstrated experience in all aspects of research, development, and demonstration in the applied and engineering sciences.Demonstrated ability and desire to lead collaborative multi-disciplinary development projects with significant partner and stakeholder outreach, communications, and coordination.Familiarity with software licensing and distribution, and intellectual property management.Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.Excellent relationship management and leadership skills with a proven track record of designing, executing and deploying multi-faceted stakeholder campaigns and/or projects across a diverse portfolio.Ease and skill working with a broad range of industry stakeholders.
