Lilly Neuroscience is seeking an associate-level scientist to join the Neurophysiology Group to facilitate its mission of discovering novel medicines for the treatment of Chronic Pain Conditions. The individual will be heavily involved in behavioral pharmacology research, thus a background in neuropharmacology is required. The scientist must have a strong skill set in immunohistochemistry as well, and experience with cutting edge technologies including Clarity and Optogenetics (in vivo) is desired. The ideal candidate must possess an exceptional attention to scientific detail, a keen interest in understanding pathophysiology of chronic pain, and be highly collaborative within the lab and across the group.
Job Description:
Designs and conducts behavioral pharmacology assays, primarily pre-clinical pain behavior assays, including sample collection of plasma and neural tissue to establish PK/PD relationships for leading scaffolds.
Analyzes data statistically and plot results for each study per PI’s expectations
Performs IHC and immunofluorescence staining on human and rodent tissue sections and subsequent image acquisitions
Specific Responsibilities:
Teamwork:
Demonstrates exceptional ability to work with fellow team members in order to schedule, coordinate, and execute high-quality in vivo studies
Displays problem-solving skills and the knowledge of inter- and intra-departmental roles and responsibilities for coordination of work activities
Communication/Flexibility:
Communicates extensively with primary investigator, as well other team members, regarding study activity, scheduling, and/or findings
Displays innovative skills to accommodate various study designs
Flexible with regard to real-time changes in study designs in light of ever-evolving data packages
Easily transitions from live-phase animal work to surgery to dissection of animals
Live-Phase Skills:
Administers test compounds to study animals (p.o., s.c., i.p., i.v., i.c., i.c.v., i.m., i.pl.)
Conducts behavioral assessments subsequent to compound administration in both manual observation and automated formats
Processes data on various instrument controllers, analyzes data using statistical software and plots data in graphical software program
Collects blood, sciatic nerve, CSF, spinal cord, and brain at study termination. Processes, labels, and delivers samples for analysis to various therapeutic labs within LRL
Accurately documents clinical observations, dosing times, dosing volume, bleeding times, body weights, food consumption and unscheduled events.
Basic husbandry and other animal support as needed
Surgical Skills:
Demonstrates aseptic procedures and possesses manual dexterity
Performs various animal surgical models such as implanting various rodent cannulas or probes for monitoring, sampling, or dosing purposes
Prepares animals for surgery, monitors animals for pain during and post-surgery and administers proper anesthetic
Necropsy Skills:
Demonstrates command of dissection and prosection of rodents
Coordinates all preparations for the conduct of necropsies
Addresses applicable clinical observations during necropsy
Delivers high-quality tissue samples
Documents, validates, and interprets gross observations and organ weight data at study termination according to Good Research Practices
Compliance:
Ensures full compliance with all Lilly regulations, including understanding and following all Animal Care and Use protocols
Basic Qualifications
MS in Biology/Pharmacology, with a minimum of 5 years of industry experience with in vivo biology pharmaceutical research, preferably with pre-clinical pain models
Minimum 5 year rodent handling and dosing experience

Additional Skills/Preferences
Ability to work with significant independence
Understanding of scientific design and methods, and all potential contributions of variability to behavioral outcomes
Demonstrated proficiency in rodent handling, dosing, necropsy, and specimen collection
Skilled in sample collection (plasma, CSF, tissue dissection) and sample preparation.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, ability to document experiments clearly and according to GRP principles
Ability to work in collaborative team environment is required as well as the flexibility and adaptability to a changing work environment
Strong organizational, multi-tasking, and time-management skills
Flexibility in responding to unexpected demands
Skilled in multiple small animal surgical techniques
Experience with electrophysiological assays
