HDR is seeking qualified applicants for a Marine Acoustic Scientist position, location flexible with preference for coastal USA. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in physical oceanography, oceanographic sampling, marine acoustics, propagation modeling, and in situ measurements of underwater sound. The primary duties of this position include: (1) The preparation of environmental documents and contract reports; (2) Directly responsible for, partnering, or assisting in all aspects of the planning, design, coordination, implementation, and reporting of acoustic research and management projects (3) Serve as project leader or assist the project leader for complex acoustic studies pertaining to the sound levels, sound propagation, and potential impact to multiple taxa in different habitats (4) Participation in marine wildlife monitoring and mitigation (5) Leadership and coordination in developing new service/research opportunities with existing clients as well as new clients; (6) Publishing scientific results in scientific [peer-reviewed] journals and presenting work at scientific meetings/conferences (7) This position will assist in a wide range of team support roles with our current clients and assist in expansion of client-base domestically and abroad. Other specific duties: • Data collection, analysis, and propagation modeling of underwater and airborne sounds produced from anthropogenic, biological, and geophysical sources • Predicting and measuring airborne and underwater noise source • Identifying sources of noise, their generation and propagation mechanisms • Investigating sound production, reception, and behavior in animals • Studying the potential impacts of noise on a range of taxa including marine mammals, birds, fishes, reptiles, and terrestrial mammals (including humans) • Tracking and monitoring wildlife using acoustic methods • Population abundance, seasonality, and behavior • Detection, classification, and localization of animal sounds • Measuring oceanographic characteristics (physical, biological, geological, chemical etc.) • Testing and calibrating underwater acoustic devices (both passive and active) • Working to support offshore industries, oceanographic science, marine mammal science, marine environmental acoustics, and defense applications • Conducting environmental compliance assessments (terrestrial and marine) • Designing, developing, testing, and evaluating sonar systems • Understanding and applying regulations, standards, and codes of practice relating to the assessment and control of noise, vibration, and particle motion • Ability to work in challenging ocean environments • Conduct in situ measurements of sounds and signal propagation in ocean habitats • Design field studies to accomplish monitoring goals • Deployment, operation, and recovery of equipment at sea • Oversee maintenance and calibration of recording equipment • Perform personnel functions, such as supervision of production workers, technicians, technologists and other engineers • Teach and mentor personnel that do not have the same practical experience in the field and/or with acoustics.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office, MATLAB or similar programming language, and acoustic propagation algorithms. Strong communication skills and ability to make science relatable to a wide audience including non-scientific clients and stakeholders. Leadership skills and ability to work in a team environment. Travel requirements may vary during any given period and flexibility in meeting travel needs is a requirement. Ability to cooperate and collaborate with others. Ocean engineers often work as part of a team. They will cooperate and integrate their work with that of oceanographers, marine biologists, geologists and geophysicists to create tools and devices to help with research projects.
