Responsibilities
JOB SUMMARY:
The Forensic Scientist I works within the Forensic Toxicology Laboratory and cooperates with and responds to direction from the Supervisor and/ or Group Lead on achieving work objectives. This position reports to and is managed and evaluated by the Department Supervisor. This position is responsible for all aspects of confirmation testing of donor specimens including specimen preparation, specimen extraction and instrument operation.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
1) Maintain chain of custody of forensic specimens and follow approved sample handling procedures.
2) Maintain competency in the following areas:
a) Follows all written procedures in departmental SOP
b) Prepares and verifies performance of all new reagents
c) Ensures that all required calibrators and quality control samples are included in each batch
d) Demonstrates good analytical technique with minimal failed loads
e) Capable of performing routine maintenance of equipment utilized in area of responsibility
f) Capable of programming sequence table for sample analysis
3) Record quality control values for each batch and notify Supervisor and/or Group Lead if unacceptable results are obtained.
4) Perform and document temperature checks of temperature dependent equipment.
5) Participate in completion of confirmation method and/or instrument validation studies.
6) Participate in validation of new calibrators, controls and new or modified analytical procedures.
7) Maintain acceptable productivity/service levels, and notify Supervisor and/or Group Lead of equipment or production problems.
8) Complete assigned continuing education activities and competency verification checks.
9) Follow the direction of the Confirmation Supervisor and/or Group Lead and adhere to all company and department policies.
10) Complete all required quality control and/or quality assurance documentation related to job function.
11) Serves as resource to co-workers and assists in the training of new personnel.
12) Follow work schedule as defined by the Confirmation Supervisor.
13) Actively participate in department meetings.
14) Maintain professional working relationship with co-workers.
15) Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Education Preferred:
Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Art degree with a minimum of fifteen semester hours in Chemistry, fifteen semester hours in Biology, and three semester hours of Mathematics.
Work Experience:
Minimum of one year of laboratory experience preferred.
Knowledge of the methods and procedures used by the laboratory.
Other:
• Demonstrated PC knowledge.
• Training and experience in performing laboratory testing, maintenance of chain of custody, and understanding proper remedial action in response to problems with equipment or procedures.
