The Information Trust Institute (ITI) has several openings available for Research Scientist. The ITI provides national and international leadership combining research and education with industrial outreach in trustworthy and secure information systems. ITI brings together over 90 faculty and senior researchers, many graduate student researchers and industry partners to conduct foundational and applied research to enable the creation of critical applications and cyber infrastructures. The following outlines the duties and requirements for this position:
Primary Function
– Support the principal investigator in the oversight and development of research projects on the security and availability of complex distributed systems, as well as the sciences of computer security, networking, and distributed systems.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
Serve as project leader to select a variety of research problems in the area of security as it pertains to complex distributed systems, computer security, and networking that fulfill the terms of the multiple security based awards; these projects will be determined by looking at computer security software and hardware and develop ideas to improve these products or to create new, more secure systems.
Lead the design of software and development of test plans for software by producing reports, research, and other materials that will aid in the efforts of creating better computer security tools for public and government use.
Provide technical instruction to research assistants and postdoctoral research associates on how to use a variety of computer programming languages to write a more secure code for computer security issues and by studying the current programming languages to see if new, more secure coding methods can be developed.
Supervise research activities of research assistants and postdoctoral research associates, including task assignment, monitoring the progress of tasks, insuring completion of deliverables by providing feedback to staff and document work process and results; report to PI on progress of designs.
Provide guidance to research assistants and postdoctoral research associates to learn computer security in systems, by guiding them in their research activities and by providing knowledge and technical guidance of establishing security protocols.
Publish written results to peer reviewed journals and disseminate research results by attending conferences to present research materials to leading organizations, such as IEEE, and ensure timely submission of reports and other deliverables to PI.
Participate in the research community by representing the PI and UIUC to both on and off campus organizations and personnel in the form of program committees, review panels and other activities as it pertains to the research of computer security.
Keep abreast of advancements in the field of computer security and research new possible funding opportunities to further the advancement of computer security which will include proposal preparation.
Minimum Requirements
Ph.D. degree in Computer Science or related field with an emphasis on systems and network security.
Five years of experience in systems and network security
A documented record of academic excellence as indicated by publications in high profile systems and network security conferences such as ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security, USENIX Security Symposium, IEEE Security and Privacy, or ISOC Network and Distributed Systems Security.
Software programming skills to include, but not limited to: C, x86 Assembly, Java, Python.
Preferred Requirements:
Experience in academic tasks such as: proposal writing, a conference reviewer, and supervising.
Experience giving invited talks, presentations, and with hosting a variety of leaders in the computer security field.
Working with a variety of Higher Education staff to include faculty, administrators, staff, and students.
This is a full-time, benefits-eligible academic professional position appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date.
