Research Associate III, Chemistry','160000009L','!*!The University of Tennessee is seeking a computational scientist for a one year Research Associate III position focusing on software development that enables users with varying levels of computational expertise to model a variety of soft-matter and biological systems. The candidate will join the Collaborative Computational Project for Small Angle Scattering (CCP-SAS) at UTK, working with a mature international team involving neutron scattering centers and academic institutions, but will be stationed at the NIST Center for Neutron Research in Gaithersburg, Maryland. CCP-SAS (www.ccpsas.org) is a joint UK(EPSRC)/US(NSF) funded project to develop user friendly open source software for high-performance simulation of molecular systems to model scattering data. The goal is to build atomistic and coarse grain modeling and simulation tools that are accessible to a broader community of experimental scientists, particularly soft matter scatterers in order to solve structural questions using constraints of small angle scattering and other experimental data, thus accelerating the discovery process.Duties and Responsibilities:• Developing and writing new algorithms optimized for GPUs and clusters• Optimizing existing algorithms for GPUs and clusters• Helping build/maintain a collaborative software development infrastructure• Providing GUI front ends and documentation aimed at lowering the barrier to entry• Collaborating on biological and soft matter projects that utilize these tools.• Helping run workshops for potential developers• Helping run workshops for users• Publishing manuscripts describing the work','!*!Minimum Requirements: PhD in computational sciences or equivalent. Good communication skills, familiarity with software development and modern software development tools, C and Python are essential. Experience with CUDA is highly preferred. Experience in a computational science, X-ray or neutron scattering and perl programming are a plus. The opening is current, and the appointment is for one year with up to one year extension upon mutual agreement. Review of applications will continue until the position is filled. Applicants must apply through the UT HR website: http://hr.utk.edu/recruitment/ ; look under Recruitment Resources on the right. Company Profile
Did you know that the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is one of the oldest public universities in the country? Did you know that it was forced to close two times? It has also had three names before becoming the University of Tennessee. A school this old has a lot of stories to tell.
UT had humble beginnings. It started off as Blount College in 1794, two years before Tennessee became a state. Blount College was located where downtown Knoxville exists today and was nonsectarian, which was rare for a higher education institution in those days. By today's standards of inflation, tuition and salaries at the time were low. An 1805 receipt reveals one man paid just $8 for his son’s tuition. UT's first president, Samuel Carrick, received an annual salary of $450.
Following Carrick's death in 1809, the college struggled to gain funding and new leadership. It closed for a decade, reopening in 1820 as East Tennessee College, thanks to a temporary partnership with Knoxville's Hampden-Sydney Academy, a boys’ school that had begun operation in 1817. The partnership brought in sufficient operating funds to allow the college to reopen.
